Show notes
You've been told wanting more is the problem. It's not. It's the motive power God built into you to create with.
In this episode of the Hidden Power Series, Jay and Sophia break down Thomas Troward's teaching on desire — why some philosophies say to kill it, why that's a trap dressed up in spiritual language, and why the very restlessness you feel about your business, your calling, or your life might not be a flaw at all. It might be the signal that you haven't aimed it yet.
What we cover:
- Why "wanting nothing" isn't peace — it's the death of your ability to choose good from evil at all
- Troward's proof: if desire were really the enemy, why would a Creative Power have bothered making anything?
- The universal law of attraction — running through atoms, plants, animals, and you
- Why restlessness in your business isn't a sign to want less — it's a sign to aim better
- The real job: not killing desire, but training it, guarding it, and pointing it at the right target
Scripture referenced: Proverbs 13:12 · James 4:2-3 · Philippians 4:6-7 · Psalm 37:4

Hey everyone, thank you for being here. I want you to picture something with me for a second. And you're sitting in your car, the engine's off, the keys are still in your hands, and you just check the numbers again. Same numbers you checked an hour ago. Nothing's changed. It's a quiet voice in your head that whispers, Who do you think you are for wanting more?
of this. Maybe you weren't in a car. Maybe it was 2 A.M. and you were staring at your Shopify's dashboard that hasn't moved in three days. And maybe it was scrolling past somebody else's launch that was just blowing up while yours is still at zero. And somewhere in that moment a thought slipped in that felt almost holy.
Maybe wanting less is the answer. Maybe if I just stopped wanting so much, I'd finally be at peace. The truth is that thought isn't peace. That's a trap dressed up in spiritual language. Now today we're gonna tear that apart. Using the words of a man who wrote this over a hundred years ago, Thomas Troward This is Episode thirteen.
Phase eight of the Hidden Power Series Desire as the Motive Power. And by the end of this episode, you're gonna understand why the very thing you felt guilty about, wanting more, might be the exact thing God built into you to get you where you were called to go. It sounds good Sophia. It sounds real spiritual, but Troward says it's actually a doorway to death, not life. Let me show you what that means. Now this is where we end up in the fork in the road.
Troward opens by naming it directly. There's whole schools of thought out there in Eastern traditions. and then they're Western copycats, but entirely on one idea. Annihilate all desire. Get to the place where you want nothing, and that's freedom. And he says something I want you to sit with.
This teaching is very dangerous because it's partly true. It's wrapped around real deep truths about the mind. That's what makes it so easy to swallow whole. But then he strips away all the fancy language and gets down to the real question underneath it. Which will you choose for your portion life or death? There's no splitting the difference.
Whichever one you pick becomes the root of everything that grows after it. That's exactly it. And he pictures it like two trees. Desire the tree of life growing in the middle of the garden of your soul or is it the yupus tree, that poisonous tree that kills everything around it? Now, this kind of is in the Proverbs thirteen verse twelve territory. Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
See, even scripture ties desire, a longing. straight to the tree of life. Not to death, to life. Now here okay, so here's the story of the empty man, okay? Now this Troward gets really brutally honest here. Picture a man who succeeds at killing off every desire.
What happens to him? That man, good and evil become identical. Because desire is how we tell the difference. You choose the good because something in you prefers it. Take away desire, you take away the ability to prefer anything at all. No motive, no action, period.
Give that man the power to create the whole universe. He has no reason to use it. Give him all the knowledge in existence. It's useless to him. Because knowledge only matters when you have a purpose to point it at. And love?
Troward says love is desire in its highest form. So that man can't even love. Strip that all away and what's left of a man. I'll tell you that there's nothing but an outward shell. If he actually reaches that ideal, he practically stopped being a person. Nothing attracts him, nothing repels him.
He's dead to feeling and dead to action because both of those require preferring one thing over another. It should be. And Troward doesn't let anybody soften it by saying it's just the bad desires we're supposed to kill. Nope. The system he's describing says the good desires have to go too. The desire for good is treated as just as much as an illusion as desire for evil.
You're not free until you feel nothing toward either one. He points straight at real Indian devotees who followed this to its logical end and became not in his words outward images of men with all power, perception and action all long gone. He calls it self induced hypnotism. Maintain it long enough and it sapsway. with every ounce of mental and physical life, leaving what he calls and I quote the hopeless wreck of what once was a living man. Bullseye, Sophia.
That's the whole flaw. The system assumes desire is bondage no matter what it's aimed at. And that assumption is what really wrecks people. Now hear me out everybody. Listen I'm gonna get real for you with a minute, because I've lived on both sides of this. There was a season in my life early on, especially building Reiland Beauty Products and building this podcast, building all of it from nothing.
Where I caught myself doing the exact thing we just described. I've hit many slow months. I've watched numbers sit flat and instead of getting honest about what I wanted, I'd I'd just tell myself just be grateful for what you have. Wanting more makes you greedy. I said that prayer more times than I want to admit. And you know what I did?
It didn't make me peaceful. It really made me smaller. It made me quieter at the very dreams God put in me in the first place. It wasn't until I sat with books and t Thomas Troward's teachings that I really understood what I'd actually been doing. I hadn't been practicing humility. I'd been practicing self erasure.
I was trying to talk myself into being the empty man we just described and then I called it faith. It's a hard thing to admit, period. But somebody listening right now is doing exactly what I did. Mistaking the death of their desire for the death of their ego. I'm gonna tell you guys right now, those are not the same thing. Killing your pride is holy.
Killing your desire to build, to provide, to grow, that's just killing yourself and slowly calling it spiritual. Now here is where there is creation in in the proof, right? And Troward really flips the whole argument on its head on this one. And this is the part I really need you to lean into. So now look around you. Creation exists everywhere.
The universe exists. Now if total apathy, wanting nothing, was really the highest, most enlightened state. when the creative power behind everything would have to be low minded for bothering to create anything at all. All the order, all the beauty we marveled at, all the creation would just be evidence of bad philosophy, right? Exactly. The universal mind clearly doesn't operate on zero desire because something exists instead of nothing.
The proof is all around us, so the real ideal isn't the absence of creative power, it's the exercise of it. And here's a pretty key line here. Now write this down. Desire isn't the thing to be destroyed, it's the very root of life itself. Without it y you life cannot be. Every single thing that takes form does so because something was selected over everything else that wasn't.
And that selecting and performing one thing over another and short names is nothing less than the universal law of attraction. One law at every level. Now this is where Thomas Thomas Troward zooms out even further. This law is selective affinity. It's not just a human thing, it's everywhere. So it's there in the chemical affinity of atoms that don't even have a mind.
If there is the instinctive attractions running through the plant and animal kingdoms and when it rises up into beings who reasons and chooses on purpose, well then that's us. The exact same law is still running underneath, just operating through a conscious mind instead of a blind instinct. Well, that's a good way to put it. And when that affinity shows up in the conscious mind, it doesn't stay abstract. It doesn't just sit there. It becomes desire.
A desire to create some condition better than what currently exists. Now here's the part that's gonna set some of you free right now today. Now Troward says our lack of knowledge might cause us to misfire. To chase the wrong direction trying to satisfy the desire. But listen close, I'm gonna tell you something. The fault was never in the desire.
The fault is in our mistaken idea of what will actually satisfy it. That restlessness you feel, that dissatisfaction that won't leave you alone, that's not a sign that something's wrong with you. That's actually the single that You haven't found your true affinity yet. Now, the moment you find it, the law of attraction takes over and produces the very condition your desire pointed you toward. Now, now I'm gonna do something here. James 4, 2 through 3.
You don't have because you don't ask. You ask with wrong motives. It was never about not asking. It's about aligning the ask. Now, let's put some skin on this. Because I know a chunk of you listening are affiliate marketers and drop shippers and Shopify owners.
Now, picture a woman. Let's just let's just call her Erica. Erica launches a new offer. Now in the first forty eight hours there's nothing. She refreshes her dashboard at two AM like it's gonna change if she looks at it hard enough. Now the old Erica, the one who bought into kill your desire, reads that silence as a sign.
Maybe I'm not supposed to want this. Maybe I should just be content with my day job. She starts shrinking her goals to match her results instead of aiming her results at her goals. Well Troward's Erica doesn't kill the desire for the business to work. She interrogates the aim of it. Is this restless telling her the offer's wrong?
Is the audience wrong? Is the message wrong? She stays hungry, but she gets specific. She digs into her data, she adjusts that targeting, she rewrites her hook, same desire, better aim. Now three weeks later, same desire that feels like torment at two AM is now the very thing that's driving her best month yet. Nothing about wanting was ever the problem.
It was the information she hadn't decoded yet. Say that again for the people in the back, Sophia. That's a whole episode in one sentence. Now this is where Desire is the creative power. Here it is. I'm gonna let you know.
The center of this whole episode. Desire is the cause of all feeling and all action, which means desire is the cause of life itself. Every bit of livingness in life comes from either receiving or sending out vibrations produced by the law of attraction. In the mind, those vibrations become conscious outreaching. in the direction of what you're attracted to. That's desire.
Now let's define it plainly. Desire is the mind seeking to give form to a thought that doesn't exist yet. It is the principle of creation. Full stop. Whether that's being created in entire world or a simple wooden spoon. The origin point is identical.
A desire to bring something into existence and something that isn't there yet. Same power, different scale. Whatever scale you're creating on, the mode of power has to be desire. Now this trod actually even goes even further. Desire is the force behind all things and also the innermost center of all life. So when a the philosophy tells you to negate desire as your starting point.
Troward says you're not becoming enlightened. You're attempting to stamp out life itself. The job is knowledge, real knowledge aimed at guiding your desires toward their true satisfaction. That's the whole purpose of knowledge. Now Troward says any knowledge that isn't applied that has a way that has failed its purpose and it's really just ignorance wearing a diploma. Desire has to be guarded, trained.
Direct it, developed to its highest sharpest form. That is the exact opposite of trying to kill it. Now, Philippians four, six through seven, I kind of fused it with Psalm thirty seven four because I kinda I really like it. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. God doesn't hand you a desireless life, he hands you a rightly aimed one. Now I'm gonna leave you with a line that hopefully will ring in your ears.
Desire has a fulfillment for its correlative. Desire and its fulfillment are really bound together as cause and effect. Once you really grasp that sequence, you can't help but see desire for what it is, the great center of life itself. Well that's that's it exactly, Sophia. Now, I'm gonna give you some practical applications for for all you guys out there. Because this show was about applying this in real life and in real business, okay?
Now, I want ya to stop apologizing for wanting more revenue or more freedom or wanting more impact. That desire is not evil. It's the motive God put and built into you to create with, okay? If you're restless in your business, I mean even right now that's not a sign to quit wanting. It's a sign your desires hasn't found its true affinity yet. Get more knowledge.
Adjust direction. Don't kill the want. Guard your desires the way you would guard anything valuable. What you let yourself want daily is training The creative power inside you good or bad. When you find alignment, that right offer, the right audience, that right message, the law of attraction isn't a marketing buzzword, okay? It's the same universal law Troward is describing, showing up in your Shopify store or your affiliate funnel.
Before you launch anything this week, ask yourself Erica's question. Right, is this restlessness telling me to quit or telling me to aim better? Nine times out of ten, it's the second one. Now, before I let you guys go, I want you to connect with us. Okay? There's a c couple housekeeping things I wanna tell you about.
